# Value Units

> Managing products, projects, and initiatives in Agile Tools

# Value Units

**Value Unit** is an umbrella term for the things your organization delivers: products, projects, services, initiatives, programs, or portfolios. Agile Tools lets you create OKRs for any of these.

## Why Value Units?

Every organization has a unique way of delivering value:

* Some think in **products** (SaaS companies, product teams)
* Some think in **projects** (agencies, consulting firms)
* Some have **initiatives** that span multiple products
* Enterprise organizations manage **portfolios** of programs

Agile Tools adapts to your terminology — you configure the Value Unit types that match your organization.

## Value Unit Types

Default types available out of the box:

| Type | Use Case |
| - | - |
| **Product** | Software products, physical products, services |
| **Project** | Time-bound efforts with defined deliverables |
| **Initiative** | Strategic efforts spanning multiple teams/products |
| **Program** | Collection of related projects |
| **Portfolio** | High-level grouping for executives |

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Need custom types?** Administrators can create organization-specific Value
> Unit types. See [Value Unit Types Configuration](https://docs.agile-tools.io/en/admin/value-unit-types.md).

## Creating a Value Unit

1. Navigate to **Value Units** in the main menu
2. Click **Create Value Unit**
3. Select the type (Product, Project, etc.)
4. Fill in the details:
   * **Name** — Clear, recognizable name
   * **Description** — Purpose and scope
   * **Owner** — Accountable person (usually a Product Manager)
   * **Contributing Teams** — Teams that work on this Value Unit

## Setting OKRs for Value Units

Once created, you can set OKRs directly on the Value Unit:

1. Open the Value Unit detail page
2. Go to the **OKRs** tab
3. Click **Create OKR** and follow the wizard

See [Product OKRs](https://docs.agile-tools.io/en/leadership/product-managers/product-okrs.md) for best practices on writing effective product objectives.

## Value Units vs. Organizational Units

| Aspect | Value Unit | Organizational Unit |
| - | - | - |
| Represents | What you deliver | Who delivers it |
| Examples | Products, projects | Departments, divisions |
| Stability | Can be temporary (projects) | Usually permanent |
| OKR focus | Outcomes for customers | Outcomes for business |
